About this experience

Preserving food through canning has always been an important tradition in food preservation. While this technique is fairly simple, there are steps and safety concerns that should be respected. Water-bath canning is an easy method of canning that allows you to store jam, pickles, salsa, and tomato sauce. Processing the jars in boiling water helps lock in the fresh, seasonal flavors for all year enjoyment. In this hands on class you will learn everything you need to know to get you started water bath canning. You will discuss equipment, safety, and recipes. Hands on experience provided

each step of the way while pickling a jar of veggies for you to take home. Other methods of preservation including dehydrating will be discussed. One glass of wine will be served during the class for guests over the age of 21.

Laura Fernandez has lived in the Greenville area since 97 when she moved here to attend Furman University. Laura has always been interested in food, both from the farming and culinary side. It is her mission to not only help people grow their own food, but to also utilize it. She wants to connect people to their food and help them return to seasonal, local eating. Laura has extensive restaurant experience and has been growing food for as long as she can remember. Her first gardening experience came when she was about 12 and asked her grandfather to get her started. Food, farming and community are of the greatest importance to Laura, and she hopes to inspire others to find their own connection to the earth and its value.
